Life in our household over the Easter period was not as we had expected, more on this in another post if I can bring myself to share...
However, I thought I would share with you my husbands sense of humour when it comes to my crafting. We have now as of last week end been married 121 years, oops, that's a slip, it should have read 21 years! And in the beginning I think he was bemused by my crafting and maybe did not actively encourage me to indulge in all my whims, but he did make the right noises. Thinking back he did sit with me just before our first Christmas together and made all our salt dough Christmas decorations, think that can be thought of as actively encouraging
But as John says, after 21 years of me crafting, the house that had a few odd bits here and there now is overrun with items not necessary and he wonders that we have any more room. He comes home after each week working away and almost dispares at what he will find next. He is due home tonight by the way and has yet not seen my latest make, wonder what he will think of these latest creations, it's a bit of a risk, they might be taking it all a step too far, but I couldn't resist.
So it was not completely surprising when coming home about 18 months ago, I found a chalk written note on our front door. Loving my husbands sense of humour, I laughed rather than be offended or worried and have kept it ever since. Woe betide anyone who comes near it wanting to use this chalk board as I want it to be kept. What did he write...
I came home to this sign one day |
... someone else may take total offense to this but not me. It was actually left on our front door for a couple of weeks in fact.
But this got me thinking about words and sayings and what other partners and better halves may think and I found this poster used by the By Hand Magazine, that started up through the Kick Starter programme. I just love this saying.

However, my husbands days of making fun of my crafting did not stop there and this past Christmas I was presented with a new tirade of words. Again I laughed (should I be taking the hint, maybe) and have hung it up in our dining room for all to see.

Crack Crochet according to John |
He has of course like many people before him confused the crochet hook for needles, what can I do, after 21 years, he still hasn't learnt.
Ironically on April 5th of this year, the comic strip Pickles produced a comic strip on crochet. I read whilst in bed Easter Sunday, the day after our wedding anniversary and laughed out loud. Turning to John and insisting he read it I said it will be us in a few more years, thinking retirement years, he snorted and replied it was too late, we were there already. Read on, see what I/he means...

I wonder how many other couples out there this could relate to?
Wishing you all an excellent Friday wherever you are, hope you have enjoyed my five photographs that I have shared with you today and my husband's "wise" words.
Joining in today with Amy from Love Made My Home
Oh my gosh! I love this post you've written. I'm going to share it with my husband of 39 years. He says he can't talk to me because I'm "counting", stitches that is.....I'm addicted to my crochet hook and knitting needles. Have a wonderful weekend (and enjoy your crocheting)
ReplyDeleteYes that's sounds way too familiar. Winder what he will make of Johns words. Do let us all know. Have a wonderful crack crochet weekend too x
DeleteYou know I love you Selma!!! Your husband is obviously a lot of fun too!! Great to read his little ode to crocheting. I get asked all the time what I am knitting!! If only I could actually knit. I am currently deep in a crazy crochet project - yet to be revealed - and so I probably come under the crack crochet heading!! Thank you so much for joining in. I hope you have a great crochet and crafting weekend!! xx
ReplyDeleteOoh can't wait for the big reveal. How terribly exciting. Enjoy your crack ;) and weekend x
DeleteOh Selma, Happy Belated Anniversary! I think he has a brilliant sense of humour too! I also think you do to take it the way I am sure it was intended. I wish I could do either, knit or especially crochet - I am sure he appreciates your talent. Have a lovely weekend x
ReplyDeleteYou tube is brilliant for teaching crochet. So many people learn that way. Come and join in with our "crack". Have a good weekend too x
DeleteYour post made me giggle & reminds me of Mike & I x

Deletehahaha this is soo funny, your hubby does have a good sense of humour!
ReplyDeleteGlad you laughed. I do love him AND his sense of humour
DeleteHow funny! A good sense of humour is always useful. I am lucky, my husband has a passion for bikes and spends every free minute on one or tinkering with one. That way, we are both happy. I do love the cartoon you posted, it is so true for many of us. x
ReplyDeleteSounds like a perfect partnership to me x
DeleteSelma, your post is priceless, thank you for sharing
ReplyDeleteit with us.

xxxx
You are welcome x
DeleteHilarious! So true of most couples whose wives crochet. Saying that, my hubby actually asked me to crochet some coasters today for our new bedside tables! I nearly fell off my chair!
ReplyDeleteI would have fallen off the chair.
DeleteHa-ha-ha-ha-ha! This had me laughing so much. Well, my take on it is that if he is teasing you about it, then he is pretty much validating your addiction and accepting of it. He gets it, just in his own manly way. Ha-ha! I love his crochet wisdom and that comic is hilarious. :) Happy hooking! Tammy
ReplyDeleteI think you are absolutely right
DeleteP.S. It will be 21 years for us in October and my husband already teases me about not being able to move around in his own house because of all the stuff and yet when people come visit, he is very happy to show off everything, even my crochet and cross-stitch creations. :)
ReplyDeleteJohn is similar he talks about my creations at work. How do I know? Someone from his work whom I have never met got in touch for a commission!
DeleteI love the 'Crack Crochet' notice! Nice to have found you through Amys Blog :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome! Lovely to have you here. I love the crack crochet too glad you did also
DeleteHa ha I love your post so funny, I'm sure we can all relate.:)
ReplyDeleteI hoped there would be lots of us and I would not be alone
DeleteOh Selma, your loo roll covers are hilarious, and yet strangely stylish... Hope you are having a good weekend. x
ReplyDeleteBrilliant that was the reaction I hoped for. You've made my day
DeleteThis was a great blog post. You sure do have a funny husband!
ReplyDeleteI do indeed Karen, I do indeed
DeleteI'm laughing, and I'm glad he's got a sense of humour! CJ xx
ReplyDeleteHe has and I still laugh. Sometimes I pretend to be cross but I'm not
DeleteYour husband is hysterical, I think he is a keeper. He obviously enjoys teasing you. I have that same Pickles cartoon cut out and hanging in my kitchen.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Meredith
Yes he does enjoy trading me. Always has. He's definitely a keeper too
DeleteVery funny and all too familiar! I'm just starting out on my crochet journey. It's very addictive! X
ReplyDeleteUh-oh. You're family will have to learn to be neglected as your addiction takes hold. Be careful my friend. There is no going back. He he he
DeleteSo funny..just received a large order of yarn on my doorstep Saturday..of course my husband had the day off and I couldn't sneak it in..lol..😊 xo susie
ReplyDeleteNow that made me laugh! How typical he was home but how exciting. What are you planning to make?
DeleteI'm thinking of doing the crochet along they have on the stylecraft website with the lily pond ...but maybe a ripple blanket..I love the yarn they have..it is the softest acrylic I have ever used..
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to get started!! xo susie
Ooh enjoy whichever you choose to do. Agree stylecraft is the nicest if acrylics I really like the ripe but the lily one looks like lots of fun. Let me know what you do Susie
